In general, a parent contact is a formal conversation between parent(s) and teacher. A parent contact usually takes place on an agreed time at school.
The subject of the parent contact is determined in advance (e.g. report), but also other important information can be discussed during the parent-teacher meeting.
For example, during a parent contact it can be about the learning outcomes, learning opportunities, well-being, involvement… of children.
A parent contact is an important time for parents to engage in conversation with their child's teacher(s). The importance of such a conversation should not be underestimated because of its various benefits.
One advantage of a parent contact is that it can create a basis of trust. Through a good conversation, the teacher and the parent(s) build and maintain a relationship of trust.
The parent contact then shows the positive commitment of the parents and of the teacher.
In doing so, it is necessary to schedule the first parent contact early enough in the year so that each other and the pupil can be looked at with an open mind.
A parent contact gives parents the opportunity to inform the teacher in complete confidentiality of certain (early) and discuss them.
This also applies vice versa: during a parent contact, a teacher can, in complete confidentiality flag certain issues and discuss them with parents.
By obtaining information about the situation at home, a teacher can can, for instance, better place the child's (learning) behaviour in the classroom. A parent contact is then an exchange moment between two parties, each with its own expertise. Such an exchange moment assumes equality. On the one hand, there is the parent who has known the child from birth and has years of experience with the child's development, history and habits. On the other hand, there is the teacher who knows the child in the classroom context and who is a professional expert in learning and interaction in the classroom.
